The purchase price is only one part of an inkjet coding project. The final quotation depends on the technology, print area, code content, product handling, working environment, controls and the evidence needed to accept the system. Two printers cannot be compared fairly unless they are quoted against the same pack, message, speed and operating conditions.
Technology, number of printheads, print height, resolution, colour, throw distance and enclosure requirement all affect the hardware route.
Stands, brackets, photocells, encoders, product guides, conveyors, guards, PLC signals, vision and reject handling can be as important as the printer.
Ink, make-up fluid, cartridges, cleaning materials, service, operator time, changeover losses and rejected packs determine the ongoing cost.
Ask each supplier to state what is included, what is excluded and which assumptions were used. A low equipment price can become a high project cost if essential integration or consumables are omitted.

Compare ink and make-up fluid use, routine printhead care, planned service and recovery after shutdown. CIJ can be the practical route for fast or curved products, but fluid and maintenance assumptions must be explicit.
Compare cartridge price, usable yield for the approved message, wiping or purging losses and the number of heads required. Cartridge cost alone does not show cost per accepted print.
Include print width, head count, ink usage, case handling and barcode quality. Direct case printing may reduce labels or pre-printed stock, but only where the carton surface is suitable.
Include operator time, jigs, rework and consistency. A low hardware price is not economical where output, placement or verification needs a fixed automated system.
Calculate consumable and labour cost against codes that pass the agreed acceptance check, not against theoretical characters or nominal cartridge capacity. Record the message, resolution, print height, coverage, line speed, cleaning routine, reject rate and production hours used in the calculation.
Ask which pack, code, speed or environment changes would require another head, ink, enclosure, sensor, stand or inspection system.
Confirm freight, installation, guarding, electrical work, compressed air, extraction, training, validation, spare parts and production-line downtime.
Agree sample prints, trial records, interface lists, manuals, training records and acceptance results before the order is placed.
