Inkjet coding machinery

2D code printers for traceability marks

High-resolution inkjet coding can support crisp 2D marks where the surface, print distance and movement are controlled.

Choosing a 2D code printer

A good 2D code printer is selected from the production problem rather than the brochure. The main questions are: what material are you printing onto, how fast is it moving, how much space is available, what code height is needed and how often does the operator change product?

For bottles and containers, continuous inkjet is often the first technology to assess. For cartons, labels and sleeves, thermal inkjet is often a cleaner high-resolution option. For outer cases and boxes, large character inkjet can reduce labels and pre-printed packaging. For short runs, handheld inkjet can provide a practical low-cost route.

Specify the data and reading requirement before choosing print size

Provide the actual encoded content and the intended use of the two-dimensional mark. Distinguish a consumer information link from a production traceability requirement, and identify the reader or verification process that will assess it. A visually sharp square is not enough to define a successful application.

Use the full required data in sample prints on the final packaging surface. Review the available area, artwork, curvature and handling after printing. Agree the assessment method and acceptance criteria with the party using the code, then retain the tested message and sample as the reference for production.

Data example
Use realistic maximum content and the required code format in the trial.
Reading context
Describe where, how and after which packaging steps the mark must be read.

Does a phone successfully opening one code prove the whole production requirement?

It is only one observation. Acceptance should follow the agreed reading or verification method for the intended use and production conditions.
