Define the failure first

Wrong, missing and unreadable codes need different controls

A coding process can fail even when the printer is operating. The wrong message may be selected, the product may be misidentified, the print can be missing, the code can be unreadable or a failed pack can remain on the line. Error-proofing should address each failure and the way it is detected and contained.

Prevent manual entry where approved data already exists

Master data

Maintain approved product, message, shelf-life rule, barcode data and print location in a controlled source with named ownership.

Automatic selection

Use a product code, recipe, scanner or production order to call the correct message where the project risk justifies it.

Permission and audit

Restrict message editing, date overrides and template changes, and retain an audit record where required by the quality system.

Automation does not remove the need for approval

Automatic data can still be wrong because of mapping, master-data or timing errors. Check the first product against the production order and challenge the response to missing, duplicate or out-of-range data.

Clear the line

Remove previous products, packaging, labels and retained work before selecting the next coding job.

Select and verify

Confirm product, message, date rule, batch and print location before enabling production.

Approve first-off

Use a named check against the production order, not memory or a screen preview alone.

Monitor the run

Inspect at a defined frequency or online according to risk, and record failures and corrective action.

Control interruption

After cleaning, consumable change, jam, power loss or network fault, repeat the required code and product checks.

Close the batch

Reconcile rejected or held product, save required records and prevent the old job carrying into the next run.
